In contrast to the 3-chord Blues, the harmonic structure of Jazz Blues is expanded. In this detailed module you will learn how the basic chords work, how the Blues can be accompanied on the high four strings and how the Blues accompaniment can be played with just two notes per chord or even just one chord. The one-chord concept can also be applied to melodies and that is a great concept because it is so simple. Then there are lots of solos to play along to. Learn them and try to analyze them. You can't think about them while you're improvising, time is too short for that when you're actually playing. But analyzing helps you to recognize the options available and to get new sounds in your ears. It's all about sounds. The more sounds you can hear, the more you'll want to play them. For years I followed in the footsteps of Jazz masters like Joe Pass, George Benson and Pat Metheny and have played and analyzed many solos. That's why I can say from experience that playing solos is a very good way to learn the language of Jazz!

Lesson 1Introduction
Duration: min
Let me introduce you to the topics covered in the course "Jazz Blues".
Lesson 2Basic Shell Chords
Duration: min
The shell chords only have three notes, root, third and seventh. This allows you to accompany the Jazz Blues in a very clear way and to easily master the chord sequence, which is more complex than the three-chord Blues.
Lesson 3Jazz Blues accompaniment on the top four strings
Duration: min
This is where additional notes come into play, but the root note is often omitted. This can be done because in a Jazz band the bass usually plays the root.
Lesson 4Jazz Blues accompaniment with just two notes
Duration: min
Using this technique you won't get in anyone's way! Grateful glimpses from the band members are guaranteed.
Lesson 5Jazz Blues with (almost) just one chord
Duration: min
By using clever chord substitutions you can accompany the Jazz Blues with almost just one chord shape. "Almost" because one note has to be changed for the 6th bar.
Lesson 6Jazz Blues with (almost) only one chord (variation)
Duration: min
By adding the interval "11" this chord progression becomes even more interesting!
Lesson 7Melodic implementation of the "one chord" concept
Duration: min
Here you will learn how to transfer the ideas of chord substitution into the melodic concept of an improvisation. After some amount of practice, you will notice progress!
Lesson 8Blues in G - Solo 1
Duration: min
