There is hardly a session in which "Autumn Leaves" is not called. Reason enough to study the chord progression in depth. In addition to the chords and their variations, you will learn how to accompany with walking bass. I will show you how to make the accompaniment more rhythmically interesting. You will learn comping on the high four strings and a modern chord solo. I will explain to you how you can improvise on these chords with just one scale and what you have to do if that is not enough for you. And the seven transcribed solos show you lots of ways of dealing with the material. Learn the solos and try to incorporate what you have learned into your playing from time to time (and later more and more often).

Lesson 1Introduction

Duration: min

Let me introduce you to the topics covered in the course "Autumn Leaves".

Lesson 2Basic chords

Duration: min

Here you will learn the basic voicings of "Autumn Leaves".

Lesson 3Rhythmic comping

Duration: min

Here you will learn a simple rhythm that makes the accompaniment more interesting.

Lesson 4Walking bass

Duration: min

The walking bass accompaniment is much more complex, you can learn it later if it is still too difficult for you.

Lesson 5Comping

Duration: min

This study is a rich source of chord variations, take plenty of time to learn it.

Lesson 6Interval study in sixths with comping

Duration: min

This study is fun and worth working on playingboth guitar parts. The sixth intervals fit perfectly with the chord accompaniment, which stays on the lower strings due to the sixths. This way you will learn a particularly economical type of accompaniment that will never get in the way of any soloist.

Lesson 7Improvising with just one scale

Duration: min

G aeolian (the parallel minor key of Bb major) consists of the notes G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb and F. This scale fits at least roughly over all the chords of "Autumn Leaves", I advise you to first select two positions on the fretboard and start your improvisation with this one scale. I show youin the video what you need to pay attention to.

Lesson 8Use of D HM5 over D7(b9)

Duration: min

D HM5 (played over D7(b9)) means the fifth degree of the G harmonic minor scale. In contrast to aeolian, G harmonic minor has an F# on board, which represents the major third of D7(b9) better than the aeolian F. Whenever D7 (with or without b9) appears as a chord, you can play F# instead of F. Be sure to practice the entire G harmonic minor scale with the notes: G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb and F#.

Lesson 9Solo 1
